The trypomastigote is an elongated cell comprised of a centralized nucleus and a kinetoplast at the posterior end of the body. It is generally 20µm long. The characteristic undulating membrane, a transparent, semifluid structure, runs along one side of the trypomastogote. The flagellum forms the outer edge of this membrane until the anterior end of the body, where it projects as a proper flagellum. Trypomastigotes circulate in human blood and do not infect tissue. Blood films usually reveal trypomastigotes positioned in a C or U shape.
